The real life story behind the creation of this statue is very sacred. When Lifting Hearts, a nonprofit breast cancer support group, asked Angela Johnson to give a tour for them at the Light of the World sculpture garden, she had no idea what she was about to experience.
After the tour Angela asked Colette Harris, one of the founders, what role Jesus Christ had played in her journey with cancer. Colette’s response was profound. “He was my everything.” Then she continued and said, “The side effects of the prolonged treatment are often very painful. Managing the pain in the daytime is one thing, but when night comes on, the darkness becomes very heavy and the pain, unbearable. Many times I would see myself singing, “Oh Savior stay this night with me, behold ’tis eventide”, with tears streaming down my face. I knew I couldn’t fight the pain alone.”
After she said this she paused. Then Angela asked, “What happened then?” Colette said, “I didn’t feel alone anymore, I felt comforted and many times it felt as if his arms were around me comforting me and bearing my pain.” Angela was deeply moved and said, “This needs to be memorialized in sculpture.” What was equally incredible was when Lifting Hearts posted photos on their Facebook page of the completed clay statue many responded with similar, beautiful, personal accounts.
